In marketing, you should get excited about a chance to reach your customers for free. Google Places is a fantastic free way to reach new clients that are searching for you.
In brief, Google Places is an extension of Google Maps. When you search for something, and Google thinks you are looking for local results, Google Places kicks in. Check out the results for “window cleaner in denver”.
Aside from the link to our homepage (which you should check out!), I’d like to draw your attention to the highlighted areas. The top is where I typed in my search. On the right you see a map the Denver area, along with some markers. These markers correspond to the search results at the bottom. Let’s zoom in a bit, and check out one the results (chosen simply for convenience).
There are a lot of great things about this listing. The ad copy (text below the headline) is very relevant. The best part is that there are positive reviews. The ability to get reviews is a great feature of Google Places. If we click on the headline, we’ll get to this company’s website. We also have the option to click on the place page to see these reviews.
On this page we see some basic information about the company. Contact info, reviews, pictures, etc.
Scrolling down a bit, we get to read the full reviews. Of course, there is always a chance that you’ll get some bad reviews from unhappy customers or from mean competitors. Dealing with negative reviews is a topic for another post, but don’t let them scare you off from trying this.
The company I looked at did a good job setting up their Places page. Hopefully it convinces you to get one set up yourself. Go to www.google.com/places/ and click on Places for Business to get started. If you have any questions or comments, I’d love to hear from you. Just email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
